Smithfield Recipient of 48 AMI Environmental "MAPS" Awards

SMITHFIELD, Va. (November 4, 2005) – Smithfield Foods, Inc. (NYSE:SFD) announced today that 48 of its plants were honored for their achievements in environmental management through the American Meat Institute’s (AMI) Environmental "MAPS" award program. Smithfield's plants were among 147 facilities to receive awards through the industry wide program. The program was created to increase the development and implementation of Environmental Management Systems (EMS) throughout the meat and poultry industry.

The acronym MAPS refers to the four different levels that facilities can achieve: Master, Achiever, Pioneer and Star. Facilities participating in the awards program received points for their environmental systems and activities. The program is comprised of four tiers, which guide facilities on how to begin and improve upon their environmental management systems.

  • Tier 1—Environmental Master. Facilities implement a basic package of environmental policy statements and compliance criteria.
  • Tier 2—Environmental Achiever. Facilities begin to identify and implement more comprehensive requirements, including development of external communication plans.
  • Tier 3—Environmental Pioneer. Facilities incorporate a complete EMS model developed in cooperation with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
  • Tier 4—Environmental Star. Facilities culminate their environmental management activities by completing an audit cycle and receiving ISO 14001 certification from the International Standards Organization.

Smithfield is the only company in the United States meat and poultry industry that has achieved ISO 14001 certification. Subsequently, 38 Smithfield facilities were the only in the industry awarded Tier 4 awards. Ten Smithfield facilities at Farmland Foods and Packerland Packing achieved Tier 3 awards.

“Smithfield is proud to be actively participating in this very important industry wide program,” said Dennis H. Treacy, vice president environmental and corporate affairs for Smithfield. “We are honored that so many of our facilities received AMI Environmental "MAPS" awards because these awards recognize our dedication to taking a proactive environmental approach through the use of environmental management systems (EMS),” Treacy continued.

Jon Scholl, agricultural adviser to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) administrator, was the keynote speaker at the awards ceremony held at Chicago's McCormick Place during the International Meat, Poultry & Seafood Convention & Exposition, part of Worldwide Food Expo.
