“Smithfield has a great history of helping the Food Bank of Lincoln support kids and families in Southeast Nebraska,” said Scott Young, executive director of the Food Bank of Lincoln. “This donation will be the centerpiece for thousands of meals on thousands of tables in the coming months.”
The significant donation provided by Smithfield and B&R Stores will provide protein to much of the Food Bank of Lincoln’s expansive service area, which includes more than 60,000 local individuals—including an estimated 19,570 children under the age of 18—across 16-counties in Southeast Nebraska who face hunger each day.
“B&R Stores is proud to join Smithfield again this year in the fight against hunger,” said Pat Raybould, president of B&R Stores, Inc. “Through this donation, we continue to support our community members in need and contribute to Smithfield’s cause to end hunger.”
This is the second large-scale protein donation made by Smithfield to food banks across the country during its 2018 Helping Hungry Homes® tour. Since the program’s inception in 2008, Smithfield has provided nearly 100 million servings of protein to food banks, disaster relief efforts, and community outreach programs nationwide.
“At Smithfield, we’re committed to supporting those in need and the communities we call home,” said Dennis Pittman, senior director of hunger relief for Smithfield Foods. “As we continue our donation tour across the country, we’re honored to contribute to the vitality of our Southeast Nebraska community and provide a nutrient-rich meal to our neighbors in need.”
