San Antonio, Tx. – June 15, 2018 – Smithfield Foods, Inc. and H-E-B joined forces to donate more than 44,000 pounds of protein to the San Antonio Food Bank. Smithfield’s contribution was part of the company’s 2018 Helping Hungry Homes® donation tour. Now in the program’s 10th year, Helping Hungry Homes® is Smithfield’s signature hunger-relief initiative focused on alleviating hunger and helping Americans become more food secure. The donation, equivalent to more than 177,000 servings, will help families fight hunger in Texas.
"This donation will help us continue to fight hunger and feed hope through education, food distribution and advocacy," said Eric Cooper, president and CEO of San Antonio Food Bank. "We believe that no one should go hungry, and we're thankful for this donation from Smithfield Foods to support the families, veterans, seniors, and many more in our community who need our help."
This significant donation from Smithfield and H-E-B will provide protein to many individuals and families in the San Antonio Food Bank’s service area, which includes 16 counties across San Antonio and Southwest Texas.
"At H-E-B we are committed to providing our communities with nutritious food and the necessary resources to fight hunger,” said Mike Jarzombek, Group Vice President Meat & Seafood for H-E-B. "We are thankful to Smithfield Foods for partnering with the San Antonio Food Bank to help our local communities facing food insecurity."
This is the 31st large scale protein donation made by Smithfield to food banks across the country during its 2018 Helping Hungry Homes® tour. Since the program’s inception in 2008, Smithfield has provided more than 100 million servings of protein to food banks, disaster relief efforts, and community outreach programs nationwide.
"Smithfield Foods is dedicated to helping those in need, and the support we are able to provide as a food company will help to assist those who are hungry," said Dennis Pittman senior director of hunger relief for Smithfield Foods. "Millions of people struggle with food insecurities in America. Our hope is through donations, time and persistent support, we can make a difference in the fight against hunger."
