Smithfield Pet Products Not Involved in Recent Recall of Bulk Pig Ear Product Due to Potential of Salmonella Contamination

SMITHFIELD, Va., July 12, 2019—Smithfield Pet, a business unit of Smithfield Foods, Inc., is aware of recent news articles reporting a voluntary recall of bulk pig ear products sold in all Pet Supplies Plus locations "due to the potential of Salmonella contamination,” and is closely monitoring the situation. Smithfield Pet does not supply Pet Supplies Plus stores with pig ears.

The safety and quality of our products is fundamental to the success of our company. Smithfield Pet is committed to providing our customers with products they can trust. We are Level 3 Safe Quality Food (SQF) certified and have procedures in place that are scientifically proven to be effective in the reduction and control of pathogens. The SQF Program is a rigorous and credible food safety and quality program that is recognized by retailers, brand owners, and food service providers worldwide.

Additionally, Smithfield Pet has quality specifications to ensure product integrity. We perform Enterobacteriaceae environmental sampling, a comprehensive testing method that samples for Salmonella and other pathogens such as Shigella, Citrobacter, E. coli, along with all members of the coliform group.
